Early experiments in Black Magic

Handmade silver gelatin print on glass (3mm glass), and mounted in a beautifully distressed wooden Victorian picture frame, with gilded detail). (308x267mm)

Made by coating the surface of the glass with silver gelatin, and projecting onto it the image from a 35mm black and white negative of a multiple exposure photomontage. Created digitally, the black and white negative is then made from the digital image. The exposures are of Brighstone Forest on the Isle of Wight (taken in twilight, flora blurs and faces are revealed in the bokeh), and images of faces and temples in Kathmandu, Nepal. The piece of glass is then developed in the dark room, and fixed with a chemical called ‘Black Magic’.

The image side of the glass is exposed, so must be treated carefully (as you would treat the surface of a photograph).

The second image is a scan of the glass before it was mounted. It is mounted with ivory mounting board behind the glass, giving it a lovely sepia-like tone.
