Early experiments in Black Magic

Handmade silver gelatin print on glass (3mm glass), and mounted in a beautifully distressed wooden Victorian picture frame, with gilded detail). (308x267mm)

Made by coating the surface of the glass with silver gelatin, and projecting onto it the image from a 35mm black and white negative of double exposed self portrait taken in Moseley, Birmingham in the late 90s. The piece of glass is then developed in the dark room, and fixed with a chemical called ‘Black Magic’.

The second image is a scan of the glass before it was mounted. It is mounted with ivory mounting board behind the glass, giving it a lovely sepia-like tone.

The image side of the glass is exposed, so must be treated carefully (as you would treat the surface of a photograph).

If you have any questions about this piece, or would like to see any more photographs, or have any questions regarding delivery, please get in touch here.
